Space Science and Technology
Exploring nanosatellite engineering, space missions, advanced materials and the effects of the space environment through research-led, hands-on education.
A student CubeSat connecting education, engineering and scientific research
UM6PSaT is a student 1U CubeSat developed through CPSE research activities with support from CNES, the French space agency. The project introduces students to nanosatellite technologies by involving them directly in the development of a complete CubeSat mission.
Visualizing the UM6PSaT platform and mission
Students participate in every stage of satellite development
UM6PSaT follows the essential development stages of a conventional satellite mission while providing a practical and accessible learning environment.
Feasibility Study
Definition of the scientific objective, mission requirements and technical viability.
Preliminary Design
Development of the initial satellite architecture and selection of its principal subsystems.
Detailed Design
Refinement of mechanical, electrical, communication and scientific payload solutions.
Manufacturing
Production and preparation of the satellite's structural and functional components.
Assembly and Integration
Integration of the CubeSat structure, electronics, power system and scientific payload.
Qualification and Acceptance
Verification and testing of the integrated system in preparation for a future launch opportunity.
Understanding the effect of space radiation on advanced materials
Beyond its educational objective, UM6PSaT is intended to support research on space radiation and its impact on two-dimensional materials developed and studied at UM6P. The mission connects space engineering with materials science and potential future technology applications.
Developing skills for future space-science challenges
Interdisciplinary Training
Students connect physics, electronics, materials science, mechanical engineering, communication systems and project management.
Learning by Doing
The nanosatellite platform allows students to apply classroom knowledge to a complex engineering system with real mission constraints.
Research Integration
The mission creates links between space technology, radiation studies and CPSE research on advanced two-dimensional materials.
